What’s a book or movie that genuinely scared you?

Actually, there are two movies.  Growing up, I idolized my older cousins.  Katie is about 7 years older than me and her brother, Ryan, is about 4 years older.  At Christmas or Thanksgiving we would all convene at Grandma’s house.  Grandma had a basement.  While the adults cooked, played poker and visited upstairs, the kids took over the basement with a level of lawlessness and lack of supervision that the adults would surely deny today.  We had a pool table, a ping-pong table, a pinball machine and….a TV with unlimited 80’s cable.

I am now 51 years old and detest horror movies.  I don’t find being scared fun at all – there’s enough fear in ordinary adult life that I don’t need to proactively and voluntarily add to it.  However, at the age of 7, I did not have that philosophy.  On the memorable night in question my older cousins decided to turn on Poltergeist and followed it up with Children of the Corn.

To this day I do not let a foot hang off of the side of the bed.  Ever.

  • So that took a few minutes…

I decided to blog more and then…squirrel! Something shiny came along and I got distracted. In fact, I’m sitting here at my desk looking at several unfinished projects realizing that I probably need to look into Adderall. But. What would be the fun of that? For the record I have: several pieces of driftwood from Galveston that I have an amazing idea for wall art just waiting to be realized, a notebook filled with multiple versions of my resume (I’ve gone on some interviews since retirement, but my desired job seems to evade me – more on that another time), my stained glass project (stuck at soldering and need to work up the nerve to try again because thus far results are disastrous), my laptop begging me to update this site, my phone buzzing and a Walter yapping about every squirrel in the yard behind me. I truly love this life.

The kids are back to school and studying hard. The grandcat has left to go be with his mother and Monty is hard at work being great at what he does. I’m still struggling to structure my days into some sort of schedule. I have been volunteering at the foodbank that is literally at the end of my street and I LOVE it. My muscles ache at the end of every shift and that makes me feel accomplished. I typically volunteer on days when they are just unloading trucks and stocking shelves, not when clients are actually there picking up food, but yesterday a man showed up with his 5-ish-year-old son to ask if he could get some food. He was very shy and obviously super self-conscious and of course we packed up some boxes for him while giving him the information about operating hours. It was incredibly humbling in a way that I did not anticipate. They’re going to have a hard time getting rid of me now.

I also just remembered how much I HATE proofreading. Like, I already wrote and had all these thoughts – why do I want to go read them? I know how this goes already. So, I’ll apologize now. I will try.
